Some delegates preparing to vote in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primaries on Saturday received money from various candidate camps to cover transportation costs, with amounts reportedly reaching GH¢200 in some constituencies.
Ablekuma South Constituency Secretary Gideon Nii Ampim Sackey defended the practice, describing it as routine logistical support rather than inducement.
“It’s normal for candidates to want delegates who will vote for them to commute easily. It’s not a big issue,” he said while speaking during the voting process.
Sackey added that delegates should not make financial support a condition for participation. “Anyone who refuses to vote with the excuse that they have not received transportation is not a true party member,” he said.
Voting is ongoing nationwide as delegates elect the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 general elections. The process has so far been peaceful, with Kennedy Agyapong casting his ballot at the Assin Central Constituency, while other contenders — Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Dr Bryan Acheampong and Ing. Kwabena Agyapong — are expected to vote later in the day.
