Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa have assured nationals evacuated from South Africa of government support as they begin rebuilding their lives at home.
The first batch of evacuees arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Wednesday (27 May), as part of a phased evacuation exercise launched in response to renewed xenophobic tensions in South Africa.
A government delegation led by Debrah and Ablakwa was at the airport to receive the returnees and coordinate initial reintegration efforts.
Addressing the evacuees, Debrah urged them to remain hopeful despite the circumstances that forced their return.
“Most importantly, we want to encourage our brothers and sisters that once they are back, they should be very optimistic and hopeful about the future,” he said.
“Sometimes God has different ways of opening new doors for us. As a nation, we shall always stand by our people, no matter where you find yourself. Be encouraged, and believe that it shall all end well.”
Ablakwa also outlined a range of support measures, including medical care, counselling and financial assistance, aimed at easing the transition for returnees.
“Today’s welcome ceremony is fully packed. You are going to receive psychosocial support. We have psychologists, medical doctors and nurses,” he said.
He disclosed that John Dramani Mahama had approved special support packages for the evacuees, including transportation allowances to help them travel to their respective communities.
“President Mahama says all of you should be given two special allowances. One for transportation… to wherever you live, wherever you are going to,” he added.
The evacuation follows reports of attacks, intimidation and property destruction targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa, sparking fear among affected communities.
Officials say the exercise will continue in phases, with further evacuations expected, while diplomatic efforts remain ongoing to ensure the safety of Ghanaians who choose to stay.
