Kwame Nkrumah Botsio, General Secretary of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), has called for stronger ethical standards and internal democracy within political parties, warning that flawed internal processes weaken national governance.
Speaking on TownHall Talk on Friday (16 January), Botsio said political parties exist to win power but must do so through transparent and inclusive processes that give all members a fair chance, regardless of financial strength.
“Political parties are the foundation of our democracy. If they cut corners internally, governance at the national level will also be compromised,” he said.
He acknowledged the NPP’s constitutional right to determine its own electoral processes but stressed that fairness must remain central.
“No one should gain unfair advantage because of money or influence,” he added.
Drawing from the CPP’s experience, Botsio said his party has, in the past, covered filing fees for aspirants to ensure that capable candidates were not excluded due to financial constraints.
He argued that leadership ideas, not wealth, should determine political advancement, citing Ghana’s founding president, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as an example of transformative leadership that emerged without elite privilege.
Botsio concluded that healthy competition among parties ultimately strengthens Ghana’s democracy and benefits citizens, regardless of which party wins power.
