NPP should reorganise before choosing flagbearer – NDC

Rashid Tanko-Computer, Deputy Director of Elections of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has questioned the NPP’s decision to elect a presidential candidate before reorganising its party structures, describing the move as politically risky.

Speaking on TownHall Talk on Friday (16 January), Tanko-Computer said while the NDC respects the autonomy of other parties, it believes proper reorganisation should precede presidential primaries, especially after an electoral defeat.

“Normally, after losing an election, you reorganise the party first before choosing a flagbearer,” he said.

He argued that the NPP’s approach could deepen internal divisions rather than resolve them, warning that unresolved structural weaknesses would eventually surface.

Tanko-Computer also suggested that the process appeared designed to favour a specific candidate, claiming the same delegate base that voted in previous contests would largely determine the outcome again.

“The structure has been designed in such a way that the outcome is predictable,” he alleged.

Despite his criticism, he stressed that the NDC does not desire a weakened opposition, noting that a strong democratic system requires competitive political parties.

“We don’t want a one-party state. We want a vibrant opposition that pushes government to perform,” he said.

He concluded that the NPP’s strategy, in his view, would delay the party’s return to power unless broader reforms were undertaken.
