Google has agreed with South Korea to establish an artificial intelligence campus in Seoul to strengthen collaboration with local engineers, startups, and research institutions.
The project was confirmed by presidential policy adviser Kim Yong-beom after discussions between South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and Demis Hassabis in Seoul on Monday.
The initiative, formalised through a memorandum of understanding between South Korea’s Science Ministry and Google, is expected to serve as a hub for AI research, training, and development.
According to the presidential office, the campus will be the first of its kind established globally by Google and is aimed at deepening cooperation between the company and South Korea’s technology ecosystem.
Under the arrangement, South Korea has requested that at least 10 engineers from Google’s US headquarters be deployed to the facility, a proposal Hassabis said he would consider.
During the meeting, President Lee and Hassabis also discussed the future of artificial intelligence and its broader impact on employment and society.
Lee raised concerns about potential job losses linked to AI and stressed the need to explore policy responses, including possible income support mechanisms.
Hassabis, in response, said the initiative is also aimed at training the next generation of AI professionals through internships and structured learning programmes.
He added that Google DeepMind hopes to deepen partnerships with major South Korean companies, including Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics, and LG, to drive joint innovation in areas such as semiconductors and robotics.
Hassabis described South Korea as a key global industrial base in AI-related technologies.
He also referenced the landmark AlphaGo match between Google’s AI system and Go champion Lee Sedol in South Korea a decade ago, saying it marked a turning point in modern artificial intelligence development.
