Former Jubilee House communications official Yaw Preko has publicly defended New Patriotic Party (NPP) stalwart Gabby Otchere-Darko, describing him as one of the most committed figures within the party despite what he called widespread hostility and “contagious hatred” directed at the influential political strategist.
In a lengthy Facebook post, Preko, who served as Deputy Director of Communications under the Akufo-Addo administration, reflected on what he described as Gabby Otchere-Darko’s behind-the-scenes dedication to the NPP during both opposition and government.
Commitment
Preko recounted a recent conversation with a senior party official who praised Gabby’s responsiveness and commitment to party affairs, recalling how he reportedly replied to a “party-related email around 1:50 a.m. shortly after receiving it.”
The incident, according to Preko, reinforced his belief that Gabby remained deeply invested in the fortunes of the NPP despite not holding an official party position.
“The same people you are denying yourself sleep for are poisoned with lies to hate you,” he wrote, lamenting what he described as unfair public perceptions surrounding the political figure.
Contributions
Preko argued that many within the NPP privately acknowledge Gabby’s contributions to the party and former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s administration but are reluctant to defend him publicly for fear of inheriting his political opponents.
He described Gabby as a leading advocate for ensuring that the Akufo-Addo administration remained connected to the party base after assuming power in 2017.
“My post is not to judge what he was able to achieve in his efforts or not able to achieve, but the commitment to see us succeed,” he stated.
The former communications official also suggested that politics often discourages people from openly expressing support for controversial or polarising figures, even when they believe criticism against them may be unfair.
Clarity
Preko insisted his comments were based on personal experience working closely within government and the party structure, stressing that Gabby’s role and sacrifices were widely known among insiders.
Gabby Otchere-Darko, a lawyer and political strategist with close ties to former President Nana Akufo-Addo, has long remained a divisive figure within sections of the NPP and Ghanaian politics more broadly.
Preko’s remarks come at a time when internal conversations about the future direction, leadership and image of the NPP continue following the party’s 2024 electoral defeat.
