“I had personal issues which led to depression” — Gyan opens up

Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has revealed he battled depression about a year ago, opening up about the personal struggle during his unveiling as an ambassador for the country’s national teams.

Gyan, Ghana’s all-time leading scorer, made the disclosure on Wednesday at an event in Accra where he was officially named the Ghana Football Association’s Ambassador for National Teams and Colts Football.

“About a year ago, I had personal issues which led me to depression,” Gyan said, his voice breaking as he addressed an audience of football officials, former teammates and guests.

The former Black Stars captain said the experience forced him into isolation, including stepping away from social media during what he described as a difficult period.

He recounted how a call informing him that Ghana Football Association President Kurt Okraku wanted to see him became a turning point.

“He encouraged me not to give up,” Gyan said, adding that the conversation helped restore his sense of purpose and focus.

Gyan said the intervention reminded him of his role beyond his achievements on the pitch, including his contribution to youth and grassroots football.

The ambassadorial role, which includes promoting the senior national team and supporting the development of colts football, was first discussed during that period, he said.

GFA President Kurt Okraku praised Gyan’s resilience, describing him as a symbol of perseverance.

“True leadership is not defined by moments of pain, but by resilience,” Okraku said.

Gyan, who remains Africa’s top scorer at the World Cup, said he is now ready to take on the new responsibility and contribute to rebuilding grassroots football.

“We must give them hope,” he said, calling for greater investment in youth development systems.
