Former Liberian President and football legend, George Weah, has dismissed claims linking him to the controversial decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip Senegal of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosting rights.
In a statement issued this week, Weah said social media posts falsely suggesting he supported awarding the tournament to Morocco were completely untrue.
“I want to unequivocally clarify that the reports claiming I support the decision by the CAF Disciplinary Committee against Senegal are completely false,” Weah said. “All those spreading this misinformation should stop using my name to support their unfounded statements.”
CAF’s decision has sparked outrage across the continent, with many questioning the fairness and transparency of the process. Weah, a high-profile figure in African football, has joined calls for international oversight.
“This ruling has further tarnished the reputation of African football, undermining confidence in the integrity and fairness of our game,” he added. “I urge the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to intervene and ensure justice is served in this matter.”
