Ghana’s opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has defended its criticism of the judiciary, insisting that citizens have the constitutional right to question court decisions they consider unjust.
Haruna Mohammed, the party’s deputy general secretary, said concerns raised by party officials over the handling of the Abronye case were grounded in observed inconsistencies.
“There has not been any circumstance where citizens cannot question the decision of a judge,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (19 May).
Mohammed rejected claims that the party’s reaction could undermine judicial independence, arguing instead that scrutiny is essential for accountability.
He cited what he described as unequal application of justice, claiming that individuals convicted in other cases had not faced similar enforcement measures.
The NPP, he said, would continue to respect court processes but would not remain silent on decisions it believes contradict legal standards.
“We will wait for the outcome of the court process, but we have the right to question,” he added.
