28 Ghanaian trafficking victims rescued in Côte d’Ivoire, repatriated for investigations

Twenty-eight Ghanaian nationals, mostly young people, who were trafficked to Côte d’Ivoire under a sophisticated criminal network have been rescued and safely returned to Ghana, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed.

The victims arrived in the country on 10 May following a coordinated rescue operation involving Ghanaian security agencies and officials from the Ghana Embassy in Abidjan.

In a statement, the Ministry said the victims are currently assisting investigators to help dismantle the trafficking network and identify those behind the operation.

“The rescued human trafficking victims are safely in Ghana and currently assisting with further investigations,” the Ministry said.

Authorities have not yet disclosed details of how the victims were trafficked, but described the operation as involving organised criminal actors operating across borders.

The government commended Ivorian authorities for their role in the rescue mission, citing close intelligence sharing and operational cooperation.

“The Government of Ghana conveys commendations to Ivorian authorities for the effective collaboration and shared intelligence,” the statement added.

The Ministry said the current administration is committed to tracking down and prosecuting the masterminds behind the network, while strengthening regional cooperation to combat human trafficking.

Officials also used the opportunity to caution the public against fraudulent recruitment and travel schemes, particularly those promoted by unlicensed agents.

It urged Ghanaians to verify all job and travel offers through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment Relations, or Ghana’s diplomatic missions abroad.

“The welfare of all Ghanaians remains our utmost priority,” the Ministry stressed.
