NPP accuses Mahama government of intolerance over arrests, remand

The General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Justin Frimpong Kodua, has accused the government of President John Dramani Mahama of growing intolerance and targeting dissenting voices through arrests and detention.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (14 May), Kodua described the current political climate as “a sad moment” for Ghana’s democracy, warning that fundamental rights were under threat.

“There have been several countless victimisations of people who oppose government actions… any time a person criticises the government, the next thing is detention,” he said.

Abronye remand sparks concern

The comments follow the remand of a Bono Regional party chairman, widely known as Abronye DC, which the NPP says is politically motivated.

Kodua said the party was alarmed by the court’s decision to remand the official, arguing that there was no prior conviction to justify claims he was a repeat offender.

“There is no court record… for which Abronye has been found guilty… so for a sitting judge to remand him… we find that very shocking,” he said.

He questioned the legality of remanding a suspect for an indefinite period pending the determination of a case.

Concerns over judiciary

Kodua also criticised what he described as declining judicial independence, alleging that some judges were failing to uphold their constitutional duty to protect citizens’ liberties.

Despite this, he said the party had formally petitioned the Chief Justice and the Judicial Council, expressing hope that some members would act to safeguard democratic principles.

“We believe there are people of integrity… who will not want to jeopardise their profession,” he said.

The NPP has called on civil society groups, religious bodies, and the diplomatic community to speak out, warning that the country risks a dangerous trajectory if current trends continue.

Kodua said the party’s position was not merely political but aimed at protecting Ghana’s democratic foundations.
