The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) is preparing to stage a protest in Sunyani this week over what it says are growing threats to free speech and democratic freedoms.
The demonstration, scheduled for 22 April, will be held under the theme “Yensuro Ahunahuna Demo” and is expected to draw party supporters from across the Bono Region.
The party says the protest is a response to what the party describes as intimidation of opposition figures and the use of state institutions to silence dissent.
The decision was communicated during a meeting with the party’s 2028 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday (18 April) with NPP executives from the Bono Region who visited him to express solidarity following the arrest and detention of party member Abubakar Yakubu, also known as Baba Amando.
Bawumia urged party communicators to remain firm and continue speaking out, insisting that pressure from authorities would not deter them.
“The intimidation can never break us,” he said.
The NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye, said preparations for the Sunyani demonstration were far advanced and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to defending democratic rights.
The party says the protest will highlight what it calls increasing restrictions on free expression and political participation.
