Nyantakyi calls for CAS appeal and major reforms in African football

Former CAF Vice President Kwesi Nyantakyi has called for urgent reforms in African football governance following the controversy surrounding Senegal’s stripped title.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (19 March), Nyantakyi described the situation as a “watershed moment” for the Confederation of African Football, urging stakeholders across the continent to push for systemic changes.

He advised Senegal to pursue the matter through all available legal channels, including the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), which he identified as the ultimate authority capable of overturning CAF’s Appeals Board decision.

“It is only the Court of Arbitration for Sport that can change the decision,” he said, encouraging both the Senegalese Football Association and government to act swiftly.

Beyond the immediate dispute, Nyantakyi stressed the need to review the composition and competence of CAF’s judicial bodies, suggesting that current structures may lack the required expertise in football governance.

“This is a clear case of incompetence, and it must be addressed,” he stated, proposing stricter selection criteria and continuous training for officials handling football disputes.

He also called for broader institutional reforms to restore trust in CAF, including measures to ensure transparency, accountability, and consistency in decision-making.

Nyantakyi warned that without such reforms, similar controversies could recur, further undermining the integrity of African football.

“This is an opportunity for African football to reset and rebuild stronger systems,” he said.
