“This could spiral”: Nyantakyi warns of fallout for CAF after Senegal row

The decision by the Confederation of African Football to strip Senegal of their title has dealt a significant blow to the organisation’s credibility, according to former CAF Vice President Kwesi Nyantakyi.

Nyantakyi warned that the controversy has created “a big dent” in CAF’s image and could have far-reaching consequences for African football, including its commercial and institutional standing.

“This is a big dent on the image of CAF,” he said on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (19 March), adding that the ruling raises serious concerns among key stakeholders, including sponsors, governments, and fans.

The fallout, he noted, goes beyond football governance and could escalate into political territory, with governments—particularly Senegal—likely to escalate the matter to regional and international bodies.

“They may take it to the African Union, ECOWAS, or even the United Nations level,” he cautioned, stressing that once political actors become involved, the implications for football administration could be profound.

Nyantakyi also highlighted the potential impact on sponsorships and betting markets, noting that decisions perceived as arbitrary or opaque could erode trust in CAF competitions.

“When the integrity of the game is questioned, it affects everything—fans, sponsors, and partners,” he said.

He warned that failure to address the issue decisively could trigger instability within African football structures and damage confidence in CAF’s governance systems.
