“Smooth talk won’t solve galamsey” — Daryl Bosu jabs Government

The Deputy Director of A Rocha Ghana, Daryl Bosu, has expressed disappointment in government’s approach to the galamsey fight.

According to Bosu, the concerns raised by President John Dramani Mahama about political and traditional leaders fueling illegal mining are not new, and should not be treated as fresh discoveries.

“We know this. Everything he has said we already know. He knew this before he assumed power” he said.

Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, he described the President’s comments as “smooth talk,” because these issues have been known for years.

Bosu added that government has had several opportunities to act and solve the issue, but has failed to properly enforce the law, especially against politically connected individuals and traditional authorities.

He said the President could have taken stronger action against people within his own party and local leaders who were suspected of engaging in or supporting illegal mining but failed to do so. “They didn’t do what needed to be done,” he stated.

He also cited instances where some traditional authorities should have been prosecuted for failing to adhere to laws concerning galamsey, noting that such actions could have served as a deterrence to others. However, the lack of accountability has caused the situation to persist.

Bosu therefore, insists that Ghanaians now need clear solutions, believing that the government has every power needed to end galamsey if it chooses to.

“I don’t want to hear His Excellency lament and talk about the issues as he is doing. What we have expected for him all along is one of solutions, and they have every power within their domain to really make sure that we get the solutions that are needed” he added.
