The Christian Council of Ghana has backed calls for stronger action against illegal mining, while urging calm and respectful public debate over environmental governance in the country.
The Council said it was launching an Environmental Care and Cleanliness Programme on Thursday (30 April), as part of its Christian Home Week activities, with a focus on promoting collective responsibility for environmental protection.
The statement comes amid renewed national debate over the government’s efforts to curb illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, which has been blamed for widespread environmental damage.
The Council also weighed in on a recent controversy involving comments by Free Zones CEO, Mary Awusi directed at Apostle Eric Nyamekye, describing the remarks as unacceptable but welcoming subsequent apologies from both Awusi and government officials.
It urged Christians and the wider public to engage constructively in national discussions, saying citizens should act as “participants and not spectators” in governance, while avoiding insults and partisan hostility.
The Council added that environmental protection remains both a civic and spiritual duty, warning that continued degradation of water bodies and land through illegal mining must be urgently addressed.
