Police deny jailbreak claims of suspects in Sammy Gyamfi’s father-in-law murder

The Ghana Police Service has denied media reports that suspects linked to the killing of a businessman in Kumasi had escaped from custody, insisting all detainees remain under guard.

The case involves Andrew Amankwa, father-in-law of Sammy Gyamfi, who was shot during a robbery attack at Ohwim Tigo Junction on 13 February.

Amankwa later died from his injuries on February 18 despite receiving medical treatment, police said.

Authorities arrested four suspects following what they described as a coordinated operation involving the Police Intelligence Directorate, the Anti-Robbery Unit and Cyber Vetting and Enforcement teams.

But reports circulating on April 27 claimed the suspects had broken out of custody, raising concerns over security and the handling of the case.

Police sources dismissed the claims as false, stating that all four suspects remain in lawful custody while judicial proceedings continue.

“The suspects are in custody and investigations are ongoing,” a police source said, urging the public to disregard unverified reports.

The case has drawn public attention due to the victim’s family ties and the circumstances surrounding the attack, with authorities maintaining that due process is being followed.
