A fire has swept through the children’s ward at Saboba Hospital, destroying beds and other essential items, hospital officials have said.
The blaze broke out at around 5pm and spread to the nearby NECO ward, which has a 12-bed capacity. All seven patients who were on admission at the time were safely evacuated, according to the hospital’s Nurse Manager, George Olamba.
Olamba said efforts to contain the fire were hampered by the failure of a fire tender to function when it arrived at the scene, forcing residents to step in.
“When the fire service arrived, their pump could not respond, so community members had to use buckets of water and other containers to put it out,” he said.
The Ghana National Fire Service has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire.
