South Africa has emerged as a standby host for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), as the Confederation of African Football (CAF) monitors progress on preparations by the East African co-hosts.
The tournament is scheduled to be staged in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda from 19 June to 18 July 2027, in what will be the first time the competition is jointly hosted by three East African nations.
However, concerns over delays in infrastructure development and stadium readiness have prompted CAF to consider contingency arrangements, with South Africa and Morocco reportedly identified as backup options.
CAF awarded hosting rights to the East African trio in September 2023 following a competitive bidding process, in a decision widely seen as part of efforts to expand AFCON’s reach across new regions of the continent.
Despite that decision, CAF has continued to assess progress on key facilities, including stadium upgrades, training centres and supporting infrastructure, amid concerns that some projects may not meet deadlines ahead of the tournament.
The 2027 edition is expected to be branded under the “Pamoja” theme, reflecting unity among the East African Community states, and is also part of CAF’s broader competition reforms.
While no official changes have been announced to the hosting arrangement, the emergence of South Africa as a backup host reflects CAF’s precautionary planning to ensure the tournament proceeds smoothly.
South Africa’s inclusion in contingency discussions is understood to form part of wider risk management measures aimed at safeguarding Africa’s flagship football competition in the event of continued delays.
