Berekum Chelsea robbery: police give blow-by-blow account; intensify manhunt for six armed gang

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has been detailing how armed robbers attacked a bus carrying players and officials of Berekum Chelsea on the Ahyiresu–Kwame Dwumor Sreso road, killing one player, Dominic Frimpong.

Police said the incident occurred on Sunday at about 2230 GMT when a VIP bus carrying about 30 players and officials from Samreboi to Berekum was ambushed by six armed men.

According to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, three of the attackers were armed with pump-action guns and opened fire on the bus, forcing the driver to skid into a bush while attempting to escape.

Frimpong sustained gunshot wounds and was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital but died while receiving treatment, police said.

Another passenger, identified as George Owusu Afriyie, 52, was robbed of GH¢4,500 during the attack.

Police said two spent BB cartridges were retrieved from the scene to assist investigations.

The command has deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts and says it is pursuing the suspects.

“The Police assure the public that the perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.

The attack occurred in the Ahyiresu area within the Nyinahin District, a route frequently used by vehicles travelling between mining communities and central Ghana.

Authorities have urged the public to remain calm as investigations continue.
