The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed shock and sorrow following the death of Dominic Frimpong, a player for Berekum Chelsea, who was killed in an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus.
Frimpong reportedly died after gunmen attacked the team while they were returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture, an incident that has sent shockwaves through the country’s football community.
“This tragic incident is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghana football as a whole,” the GFA said in a statement. “Dominic was a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league.”
The association extended condolences to the player’s family, teammates, and the club’s management, describing the loss as devastating.
The GFA said it is in contact with relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations continue into the attack.
It also called for swift action to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
“We urge that all necessary measures be taken to ensure justice is served,” the statement said.
The football governing body added that it would engage stakeholders to review and strengthen security arrangements for teams travelling for domestic competitions.
The killing has raised renewed concerns about safety on Ghana’s highways, particularly for sports teams travelling long distances for league matches.
The GFA called on the football community to rally behind Berekum Chelsea and the bereaved family during what it described as a difficult period.
