Anti-corruption campaigner Edem Senanu says the recent legal challenges confronting the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) are a sign that the institution is making progress in tackling corruption.
Speaking on Asaase Breakfast Show on Thursday (16 April), Senanu argued that individuals implicated in corruption are increasingly resorting to legal strategies to evade accountability.
“When you fight corruption, corruption fights back,” he said.
He rejected claims that the High Court ruling strips the OSP of its prosecutorial powers entirely, noting that the decision relates to a specific case and remains subject to further judicial review.
Senanu warned that requiring the OSP to operate under the Attorney-General risks reintroducing political interference into corruption prosecutions.
“The whole idea was to avoid a situation where the Attorney-General cannot prosecute members of government,” he explained.
He called for constitutional reforms to entrench the independence of the OSP, arguing that Ghana must adopt global best practices that allow independent prosecutors to operate without political control.
According to him, strengthening anti-corruption institutions—not weakening them—is critical to sustaining public trust and accountability in Ghana’s governance system.
