The Ghana Police Service is investigating an alleged unauthorised withdrawal of GHC400,000 from a mobile money account, a case authorities say is linked to proceeds from a gold robbery and fraud scheme.
The probe was initiated by the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) on the directive of Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno, following a complaint involving a Kumasi-based mobile money merchant, Derrick Okyere Dapaah, also known as “Pablo.”
Police said investigations have established that the GHC400,000 forms part of funds paid in a suspected gold transaction that turned into a robbery.
According to investigators, a complainant, Francis Ayaaba, reported in December 2025 that he was lured to a house at Ntoaso near Nsawam under the pretext of purchasing gold.
He told police he paid GHC500,000 in cash and transferred an additional GHC400,000 via mobile money.
“Immediately after making the payment, some armed men showed up at the location and robbed him of the gold,” police said.
Authorities traced the mobile money transfer to accounts linked to Dapaah, who allegedly moved the funds across multiple wallets.
The money was later withdrawn by a suspect identified as Abudu Dauda, who police say used a Ghana Card bearing the name Isagali Promise.
He reportedly told investigators he carried out the withdrawal on behalf of another suspect, Alhaji Ibrahim.
Police said they obtained court orders to freeze the mobile numbers involved, reverse the transaction and secure the funds as evidence pending the outcome of the case.
Four suspects – Abudu Dauda, Prince Ofori, William Nene Sakitey Osabotey, a goldsmith linked to the premises where the transaction occurred, and Dapaah – have been arrested and charged.
All four have been granted bail and are expected to reappear in court on 29 April.
Police said efforts are ongoing to arrest two additional suspects, identified only as Alex and Alhaji Ibrahim, who remain at large.
