The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it is prioritising security and transparency in its upcoming flagbearer election, pledging strict police oversight to prevent violence or disruptions.
The comments come from Isaac Yaw Boamah-Nyarko, MP for Effia and member of the party’s presidential election committee, speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday (17 January).
He stressed that the process is under the full control of the Ghana Police Service and warned against any attempts at vigilantism or interference.
“No vigilantism, no machoism, no “bodyguardism” by any aspirant is going to be entertained,” he said, adding that police have been instructed to intervene if any group attempts to disrupt the process.
Peace pact
The NPP MP said all aspirants have been briefed on the rules and that any misconduct, even if not directly sanctioned by a candidate, could tarnish the election’s credibility.
He also noted that a peace pact will be signed by all aspirants, former presidents, and the party’s peace council on Thursday to commit participants to accepting the election outcome.
The party is moving to select its presidential candidate ahead of the 2028 general elections, with the MP arguing that an early selection would strengthen the party’s position against the opposition National Democratic Congress, which is expected to field a new candidate.
“Everything is open for a transparent election for which reason anyone that comes victorious needs the support of everybody that participated,” he said.
The MP also urged party members to maintain discipline and avoid negative campaigning, stressing that the outcome should reflect the party’s commitment to fair competition rather than personal attacks.
The candidates
Five known stalwarts are contesting the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer position ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections, party officials confirmed.
The aspirants are Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, a former General Secretary; Hon. Ken Ohene Agyapong, former MP for Assin Central and Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong, former Agric Minister and Abetifi MP.
The rest are former vice president H.E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, and former education minister Hon. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum.
