The Member of Parliament for Ashaiman, Ernest Henry Norgbey, has urged everyone involved in the land dispute at Ashaiman to stay calm and submit their legal documents to the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE).
He explained that two different groups are claiming ownership of the land, so the Assembly must be the one to check the documents and decide.
This follows renewed tension between the Peaceful Settlers Association and the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly after reports that about 100 shops have been earmarked for demolition.
While the traders insist they have valid documentation, the MP says he cannot determine ownership of the land, stressing that the matter lies in the hands of the Municipal Assembly.
Speaking in an interview with Asaase News, Norgbey expressed worry about the impact of demolishing shops where many residents earn their daily income.
He said he had asked the Assembly to act cautiously, adding that “where people get their livelihood, we need to tread cautiously.”
He also confirmed he had not been informed about the supposed demolition of 100 structures, stating that nothing of that sort had been mentioned to him, although he was following the issue closely.
He noted that anyone with legal documents must present them to the MCE. “I don’t determine who is the owner.
If anybody has a legal document, that person must send that to the Municipal Chief Executive so that the matter will be resolved”, he said.
