President John Dramani Mahama has shown steady leadership in his first year back in office, though concerns remain about the government’s attention to environmental issues, an environmental advocate has said.
Daryl Bosu, Deputy Regional Head of A Rocha Ghana, said Mahama’s leadership marked a shift from what he described as weak governance prior to 2025, adding that the administration had met some public expectations despite challenges.
“We were really at a point that governance was so low, leadership that we needed prior to 2025. And so for me I have seen that the leadership of H.E. John Mahama so far has been on good course,” Bossu said on Saturday (10 January) while speaking on The Forum, a current affairs programme on Asaase Radio.
He noted that although not all policies had delivered as expected, broader social and economic indicators suggested progress.
“It is not everything that has worked well but if you put all the parameters—social and economic indicators—you would say that the government has really lived to some expectation,” he said.
Equal focus
However, Bossu expressed disappointment that environmental issues were not highlighted in Mahama’s New Year address, warning that sustainable development requires equal focus on economic, social and environmental pillars.
“I really missed him talking about the issues of environment because every society is governed by issues of economy, social and environment, and so failing to speak about the environment questions whether he still has the environment at heart,” he added.
Refreshing leadership
Despite the concerns, Bossu described Mahama’s leadership as refreshing and said he hoped the government would remain consistent in delivering on its commitments.
“Generally it has been quite a refreshing leadership. I am looking forward to have this government continue on the same path—consistently delivering, talking about empathy and ethical leadership. These are the things I expect the president to live up to into the future,” he said.
Mahama marked one year in office earlier this month after returning to power following the 2024 general election.
