The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has clarified that teacher licensure exams will remain part of the professional certification process, rejecting claims that the government intends to cancel them.
Nana Sarfo Ogyaba, a member of the NDC communication team, speaking on Asaase Radio’s The Forum, said the exams are a key requirement for final-year education students before entering the teaching profession.
He added that the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, plans to fully integrate licensure exams into the system by August.
“Throughout the campaign in 2024, President Mahama said he would take off the licensure exams, but it was in context. We want to bring it to the final year. Before you come out as a professional teacher, you will have the license,” Ogyaba said.
“It is a four-year mandate. One year down the line, and with the four-year mandate that Ghanaians have given to President Mahama and the NDC, we are not going to say that we will take it off as a campaign promise. But before you finish school, you have to write it and attach it to your certificate,” he said.
Ogyaba’s remarks follow public debate over whether the government would honour its opposition-era statements to review or cancel the licensure exams.
The NDC asserts that maintaining the exams upholds professional standards for teachers in Ghana.
