The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana has praised the impact of Ghana’s national electronic pharmacy platform on healthcare delivery, describing it as a major step forward in expanding access to medicines and services.
The platform, known as the Ghana National Electronic Pharmacy Platform (GNEPP) or “e-pharmacy,” was launched by former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia to support virtual healthcare delivery across the country.
It enables patients to access medical consultations, diagnoses, prescriptions and specialist care remotely, reducing the need for in-person visits and extending services to underserved communities.
Speaking to AsaasePa News on the sidelines of the society’s 90th anniversary celebrations, its president Paul Owusu Donkor said the integration of the platform had improved both the availability and affordability of medicines.
He described the initiative as a “game changer” for the sector, particularly in enhancing access to pharmaceutical services.
However, Donkor urged policymakers to address disparities in access between urban and rural areas, noting that gaps in infrastructure and digital access continue to limit the platform’s full potential.
“We have made significant progress, but more needs to be done by placing greater focus on the everyday user, both in urban and rural areas, to bridge the gaps and enable them to effectively use these technological services to improve the health of our people”, Donkor said.
“We, as the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, believe that the integration of tele-pharmacy is a game changer in ensuring the availability and affordability of medicines”, he further stated.
He called for targeted measures to ensure wider adoption, especially in remote communities, to strengthen healthcare delivery nationwide.
Ghana has in recent years increased investment in digital health solutions as part of broader efforts to improve service delivery and expand access to care.
