Gov’t now prioritising job creation, says Finance Minister

The government is now prioritising job creation, particularly for the youth, after a year focused on stabilising Ghana’s economy, Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has said.

Speaking after a meeting with Paschal Donohoe, Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank, Dr Forson said discussions centred on Ghana’s economic transformation and the next phase of national development.

“A while ago, I had a productive discussion with the Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank, Mr. Paschal Donohoe, on Ghana’s economic transformation and the next phase of our development agenda,” he wrote.

Dr Forson explained that last year was devoted to resetting the economy and putting it on a path to sustainability. “I noted that last year was focused on resetting the economy and placing it firmly on the path to sustainability,” he said.

But the minister stressed that unemployment remains a major challenge, particularly among Ghana’s rapidly growing youth population. “Today, one of our major challenges is unemployment, particularly among our youth,” he noted.

He said governments cannot rely solely on public sector jobs to meet the needs of young people and that Ghana is now implementing policies and programmes designed to create sustainable employment across the country.

“Africa has a rapidly growing youthful population, and it is clear that public sector employment alone cannot provide the opportunities our young people need,” he added.
“We are therefore putting in place major policies and programmes to sustainably create jobs.”

Dr Forson also revealed that Donohoe commended Ghana’s improved fiscal position and pledged continued support to the country’s job creation efforts.

“Mr. Donohoe congratulated us on the remarkable improvement in our national finances,” he said.
“He indicated that the World Bank stands ready to continue supporting Ghana, including through a Jobs and Growth Analysis that will help identify new opportunities for job creation.”

The Finance Minister welcomed the World Bank’s ongoing partnership, describing it as crucial for expanding opportunities and securing a prosperous future for Ghanaians.

“I welcome the World Bank’s continued partnership as we work to create jobs, expand opportunities, and secure a more prosperous future for our people,” he said.
