Accra: 33-year-old woman arrested after allegedly posing as nurse to steal newborn

Police have arrested a woman in connection with the theft of a four-day-old baby boy from the postnatal ward of a hospital in the capital, Accra, authorities said on Wednesday.

The Dansoman Police Command of the Ghana Police Service arrested Latifa Salifu after what police described as swift investigations and public cooperation following the report of the incident.

Speaking at a press briefing, Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Accra Regional Head of Public Affairs, said the case was reported on Tuesday (17 February), when the baby went missing from Mamprobi Hospital.

According to police, the baby’s mother, Precious Ankomah, who delivered on Feb. 14, told officers that “a woman dressed in a nurse’s peach-colored uniform took the baby under the pretext of administering medication and disappeared.”

Police said the child’s disappearance was reported at about 10 a.m. by Abigail Dzikunu, who was accompanied by Henrita Abe Blessed. They told officers that “an unidentified woman, disguised as a nurse, had stolen a newborn from the hospital’s postnatal ward.”

Investigators said officers immediately visited the hospital, collected statements and launched a search. At about 3:40 a.m. on Wednesday, police arrested the suspect, a 33-year-old cloth seller, at the premises of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where she was found with a baby believed to be the missing child.

The suspect claimed she had delivered at the hospital and was discharged due to a lack of care, but police said “checks conducted revealed no hospital records to support her claim.”

Police said the suspect remains in custody while arrangements are being made for the baby to be placed under hospital care for medical attention and safekeeping as investigations continue.
