Gyakie opens up on TGMA nominations and After Midnight album

Award-winning Ghanaian singer-songwriter Gyakie has spoken about her excitement ahead of the 27th edition of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards during an interview on Penpensiwa on AsaasePa hosted by Obomengniibaa Nana Akua. The TGMA is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Grand Arena after organisers confirmed a venue change earlier this week.

Excitement ahead of TGMA

Speaking on the show, Gyakie said she is looking forward to the awards night. She added that this year’s competition is very tight and features many deserving nominees. Additionally, she described the event as one that will be memorable.

“I’m very excited about this one. I know the evening is going to be iconic because every category is tight. It’s full of people who deserve it. This particular TGMA is going to be a memorable one,” she said.

Nominations for After Midnight and Sankofa

Gyakie is nominated for Album/EP of the Year with her 17-track project After Midnight, Best Afropop Song of the Year with Sankofa, and Best Afrobeats/Afropop Artiste of the Year. She believes all three nominations reflect her effort and consistency. She also added that she deserves any recognition she receives.

Inspiration behind Y2K Love

The singer also explained the inspiration behind Y2K Love featuring Omar Sterling. She revealed that she sampled her father, highlife legend Nana Acheampong, because the message of the song aligns with his musical legacy. Furthermore, she said the decision felt natural.

“It made sense because he is a highlife legend, he is my father, and the message of ‘Nanka 3b3y3 d3n’ matched perfectly,” she said.

Collaboration with Kuami Eugene

Gyakie also spoke about her collaboration with Kuami Eugene on Stranger off his Sweet Boy EP. She said the connection was instant and the song felt right from the first listen.

Love life update

Away from music, Gyakie briefly addressed her relationship status during the interview. She described herself as single and open to genuine connection. Additionally, she noted that one never knows where things may lead.

“I’m single. If you like me, just text me. If you see me, tell me ; you never know where it could go.”

Gyakie remains one of the standout nominees heading into this year’s TGMA. Meanwhile, anticipation continues to build ahead of the awards night at the Grand Arena.
