Foundational learning gaps weakening students’ critical thinking – education strategist Kobina Boamah

The Director for Strategy and Operations at Lead for Ghana, Kobina Boamah, has warned that significant learning gaps at the foundational level are affecting students’ ability to think critically and solve problems.

Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (16 March), Boamah said many students progress through the education system without fully mastering basic literacy and numeracy skills.

He compared the situation to constructing a building on an incomplete foundation.

“If the foundation of a house is only partly completed and you continue building on it, the structure will eventually become unstable,” he explained.

Boamah said similar gaps occur in education when students move to higher levels without consolidating core skills such as reading comprehension, writing and numeracy.

“When students reach senior high school or university, many still struggle with comprehension and critical thinking,” he said.

He noted that social media and digital tools have also contributed to shorter attention spans among both students and adults.

“Many people are now used to consuming information in very short formats. When students are given longer materials to read, they try to bypass the effort,” he said.

Boamah added that while technology has the potential to improve learning, disparities in resources between schools remain a challenge.

“In many public schools you may find only one or two computers for a class of about 60 students,” he said.

He stressed that improving teacher training and strengthening foundational education would be critical to preparing students for the modern economy.
