The Deputy Public Relations Officer of the National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations, Irene Sam, has called for a balanced approach to technology use in education to protect children’s cognitive development.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday (16 March), Sam said education must develop three key areas of human growth: cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills.
According to her, excessive reliance on digital tools risks undermining the real-life experiences that traditionally helped children develop critical thinking.
“In the past, activities like household chores, going to the market and interacting with others helped shape our thinking and problem-solving abilities,” she explained.
Sam noted that technology has rapidly entered children’s lives without adequate guidance or awareness for parents.
“Most parents were born before the computer era, so supervising children in the digital age is becoming increasingly difficult,” she said.
She warned that overdependence on artificial intelligence tools could weaken students’ ability to think independently.
“Learning should produce a permanent change in behaviour, but if children rely only on AI to get answers, they may not truly understand what they learn,” she said.
Sam urged parents and educators to create a balance between digital learning and real-world experiences to support children’s overall development.
