At least 23 suspected illegal miners have been arrested for polluting the Oda River located in the Ashanti Region, according to the Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission.
The suspects, including four women, were arrested while allegedly carrying out illegal mining activities along the river at Aburokyere, Bepotenten and Sukuumu in the Amansie Central District.
During the operation, the team seized 82 changfan machines, 77 water pumping machines and 21 motorbikes. About 20 makeshift structures used by the miners were also destroyed.
Officials say the activities of the illegal miners have heavily polluted the Oda River, a key water source that sustains nearby forests and supports farming communities.
Many peasant farmers in the area have reportedly lost their livelihoods as polluted water makes it difficult to irrigate crops.
The operation involved 31 Rapid Response personnel, seven forest guards, as well as officers from forest resource management and district authorities.
The suspects are expected to face further investigations as authorities intensify the fight against illegal mining.
