The University for Development Studies (UDS) is intensifying calls for stronger policy support to transform the guinea fowl sector, describing it as a critical yet underdeveloped area of agriculture in Ghana.
The university believes that with the right regulatory framework and targeted investments, guinea fowl production could significantly contribute to national food security, job creation, and rural economic development.
Speaking at the university’s 23rd Inaugural Lecture, Professor Ibn Iddriss Abdul Rahman emphasised the urgent need for government-backed policies that prioritise research into guinea fowl breeding, nutrition, and disease management.
He noted that the absence of structured policies has limited progress in the sector, leaving farmers to rely on traditional methods that often result in low productivity and high losses, particularly among young birds.
A major concern highlighted was the high mortality rate of keets, which in some instances reaches alarming levels among local farmers.
According to Abdul Rahman, addressing these challenges requires deliberate policy interventions, including the development of improved strains, establishment of standardised feeding practices, and introduction of vaccination programmes tailored specifically to guinea fowls.
He also stressed the need to tackle the birds’ seasonal breeding nature to ensure consistent production throughout the year.
Chairing the lecture, the Vice-Chancellor of UDS, Professor Seidu Al-Hassan, underscored the importance of aligning research with policy and industry needs.
He called for closer collaboration between government, academia, and private sector players to unlock the full potential of the guinea fowl industry.
He further urged policymakers to recognise indigenous livestock as a strategic asset in building a resilient agricultural sector and improving livelihoods across Ghana.
