The Greater Accra Regional Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Daniel Parker-France, says the party’s defeat in the Ayawaso East by-election was driven largely by low turnout in its strongholds and what he alleges were inducements by opponents.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (4 March), Parker-France said the NPP activated its usual “Get Out The Vote” (GOTV) strategy but struggled to mobilise supporters in working-class communities.
“Every political party has its own strategy. We also deployed our machinery to get out the vote,” he said. “But many of our supporters are workers who have relocated from the constituency, and that affected our numbers.”
He argued that the party’s traditional bases recorded lower participation, while areas considered opposition strongholds turned out in higher numbers.
Parker-France further alleged that the governing National Democratic Congress influenced the outcome through material incentives, including the distribution of food items and cash to voters.
“It wasn’t only about getting out the vote. There were other things that gave them the advantage,” he claimed, alleging rice and money were shared with some residents.
Despite the loss, he maintained the result should not be interpreted as a broad rejection of the NPP, insisting it reflected local dynamics and turnout challenges rather than a national political shift.
Looking ahead, Parker-France said the party has begun reorganising from the grassroots by updating its membership register and strengthening polling station structures.
“We are starting from the base — registering members and electing committed officers who are ready to work, not just hold titles,” he said.
He expressed confidence that renewed mobilisation would position the NPP strongly for the 2028 general elections, arguing that many voters were already reassessing their support for the ruling party.
