The Greater Accra Regional Organiser of the National Democratic Congress, Anthony Nukpenu, says the party’s by-election victory was the result of sustained grassroots mobilisation rather than vote-buying or last-minute inducements.
Also speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday (4 March), Nukpenu described the outcome as a reflection of voter confidence in the party’s structures and approach.
“We went to the homes of the people, spoke to them and reminded them that voting is their civic responsibility,” he said. “We are not going to induce anybody with goodies.”
His comments followed allegations by the opposition that the NDC distributed food and cash to sway voters — claims he firmly rejected.
“We never shared even sachet water,” Nukpenu said. “There was no distribution of rice or anything of that sort.”
Instead, he said the party deliberately avoided the common practice of rolling out projects or material incentives during by-elections.
“We want to move away from that narrative where development only comes during elections. Projects should come when people need them, not because there is a by-election,” he added.
Nukpenu stressed that modern political organising requires constant engagement rather than last-minute mobilisation, calling for a restructuring of party operations at the base.
“We must go away from writing names just for internal contests. We need active members who work daily, engage communities and protect the image of the party,” he said.
He concluded that the victory demonstrates the effectiveness of door-to-door outreach and sustained voter education, adding that the NDC intends to strengthen those methods ahead of future elections.
