In the heart of Accra this February, Asaase Radio transformed Black History Month from a series of on-air reflections and conversations into a powerful cultural moment that resonated across the city and beyond.
Anchored by an ambitious blend of storytelling, music and community engagement, Asaase Radio’s events culminated in what many are already calling one of the most impactful Black history summits ever organised in Ghana.
The highlight of the month was the Black History Month Summit & Night of Legacy 2026, held at the historic W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Centre for Pan-African Culture.
The Summit brought together leading thinkers, artists and cultural advocates from across Africa and the diaspora to probe the roots of Black history and connect them to modern challenges and opportunities. It was not just a celebration, it was an invitation to reflect, learn and act.
Driving this remarkable initiative was Mel Kwesi Davis, who served as both the event organiser and project lead, bringing vision and professionalism to every aspect of the Summit and Night of Legacy.
Mel Kwesi Davis is a respected entertainment personality, industry consultant and cultural commentator, known for his insightful contributions to Ghana’s creative and media sectors.
As Vice President of the Foundation of Concerned Arts Professionals (FOCAP), he has consistently advocated for the economic and artistic value of Ghana’s creative industries. In interviews, Davis has shared his perspective on global music trends — for example, explaining how Afrobeats continues to evolve rather than fade, and urging artists and professionals to engage strategically with this evolution.
His roots in the industry run deep: Davis has worked as an event manager and artiste manager, handling prominent Ghanaian music talents and speaking candidly about the business challenges within the local music scene.
This blend of cultural insight, practical experience and an ability to bridge diverse sectors of media and arts made him uniquely suited to lead the Black History Month Summit.
The Summit itself was electrifying. Scholars, cultural leaders and creatives unpacked the historical trajectories of Black struggle and achievement, while artists interpreted those legacies through performance and expression.
A memorable moment came when a lifetime achievement citation was awarded to the family of the late highlife legend Ebo Taylor, honouring his six decades of influence on Ghana’s music and on African sound culture at large — a gesture that fused the summit’s intellectual depth with genuine celebration.
This summit exemplified Asaase Radio’s broader mission: to extend the stories of Black history beyond textbooks and into the living pulse of communities.
In addition to the Summit, live broadcasts and interviews ensured that powerful conversations radiated far beyond the Du Bois Centre, reaching listeners both in Ghana and across the diaspora.

Strategically, Asaase’s approach was as multimedia as it was scholarly.
By centring voices often overlooked in mainstream narratives, from diasporic thinkers to Ghanaian cultural custodians — the Summit remapped what “Black History Month” can mean in a local and pan-African context.
Mel Kwesi Davis’s leadership was instrumental in this achievement. From conceptualisation to execution, his experience in media, arts strategy and event coordination ensured that the event was both inspirational and operationally flawless.
The result was not just a gathering of minds, but a celebration of legacy, one that invited reflection, connection and collective purpose.
In an era where global conversations about race, identity and cultural heritage continue to evolve, Asaase Radio’s Black History Month Summit stood out as a moment of clarity and unity.
It reminded us that Black history is not confined to distant memory, it lives in music, storytelling, debate and shared cultural experience.
Through this Summit and Night of Legacy, Black history was not simply commemorated — it was honoured, amplified and set as a foundation for future progress.
