Alexander Afenyo-Markin, MP for Effutu and Minority Leader in Parliament, traced the historical evolution of Ghana’s Danquah-Busia-Dombo political tradition during his lecture at the Young Commons Forum (YCF) UCC Summit.
Speaking to students and faculty, Afenyo-Markin described the tradition as Ghana’s centre-right ideology, emphasising liberal democracy, constitutionalism, individual liberty, decentralisation, and market-oriented economic organisation.
He highlighted the contributions of Dr J B Dankwa, Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia, and Chief Simon Diedong Dombo noting how the movement influenced opposition politics from the UGCC era to the establishment of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 1992.
The MP explained that the tradition survived military rule and political repression, adapting to changing socio-economic conditions while remaining committed to property-owning democracy, human capital development, and private sector-led growth.
He urged students to study these political foundations as a way to enrich Ghana’s democratic governance.
