Ellen Ama Daaku, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a campaign team member of former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has criticised President John Mahama’s first year in office, accusing him of hypocrisy and political exclusion.
Speaking on The Forum on Asaase Radio on Saturday (3 January) Daaku said the administration’s actions contradict repeated calls for national unity, arguing that governance under Mahama has created divisions along party lines.
She cited the termination of public sector appointments made under the previous NPP administration, following a directive from the Chief of Staff, describing the move as unfair to individuals who had gone through lawful recruitment processes.
“You cannot tell us that we are all Ghanaians and should come together when your actions show otherwise. What you have done in the past and in government tells us that we have NPP Ghanaians and we have NDC Ghanaians and the others.”
“We come into office, the previous government have employed certain people, they had gone through processes and they were employed…This is not even a political matter, people were employed after due process, yet they were sent home with a single letter.”
Economic priorities
Daaku also questioned the government’s economic priorities, pointing to the 2025 budget decision not to recruit teachers and nurses despite what officials have described as significant inflows from gold-related revenues used to stabilise the cedi.
She argued that currency stability has not translated into improved living standards, citing rising prices of basic goods as evidence.
“Last year a tin of Ideal Milk sold for eight cedis. Today it sells between 12 and 15 cedis,” she said. “How do you tell Ghanaians the economy is doing well?”
Daaku further criticised the president over judicial matters, referencing comments made before the election about the Chief Justice’s tenure, which she said later materialised in her removal.
“You cannot sack the Chief Justice and return to say Ghana belongs to all of us,” she said.
Ghana on right path
Government officials have previously defended their policies, insisting that economic stabilisation measures, public sector reviews and institutional reforms are lawful and necessary for long-term recovery.
President Mahama in a New Year message said the country is recovering from last year’s economic and social strains and is “rising again” after a year of reforms and tighter management,
“Many predicted it would take a generation to recover,” Mahama said, adding that his government believed in the resilience of Ghanaians and prioritised reversing the decline.
Critics, however, argue that everyday hardship and perceptions of political bias continue to undermine public confidence.
