17 people are facing court after an attack on students during celebrations at Wa Senior High School, prompting police to step up engagement with the school to reinforce security and discipline.
The Ghana Police Service said the suspects were arrested following violence that erupted during the school’s SRC Week celebrations on 28 January, when students were attacked by peers from another school.
In response, the Upper West Regional Police Command on Monday engaged students and staff of the school, also known as WASEC, as part of efforts to prevent further unrest and promote peaceful coexistence on campus.
The engagement was led by the Upper West Regional Commander, Francis Yiribaare, who addressed about 2,000 students and staff, reaffirming police commitment to protecting educational institutions across the Upper West Region.
Yiribaare warned against violence, vandalism and the use or trafficking of illicit drugs, stressing that criminal behaviour at a young age could have long-term consequences for students’ academic and career prospects. He said schools must remain centres for learning and character development, not arenas for indiscipline or crime.
The headmaster of Wa Senior High School, Alhaji Iddrisu Thirdman, welcomed the police intervention and pledged the school’s continued cooperation with law enforcement to maintain discipline and lawful conduct.
Police said the engagement underscored ongoing collaboration between security agencies and school authorities to ensure a safe and secure learning environment.
