CPP thanks Mahama over airport renaming, calls for return of confiscated properties

In a statement issued on Thursday, 5 February 2026, and addressed to media houses, the party said the decision restores a name first given by Ghana’s founding President, Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, after he transformed the former military base into an international airport in 1958.

The CPP noted that the renaming recognises the legacy of Nkrumah and corrects what it views as past distortions tied to the events that followed the 1966 coup d’état which overthrew his government.

“This was the name given by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, after transforming the former military base into a 500,000 passenger a year International Airport in 1958,” the statement said.

However, the party argued that the gesture should go beyond symbolism and be matched with concrete restitution.

It called on the government to return all CPP properties nationwide that were seized in the aftermath of the 24 February 1966 coup, claiming the assets were acquired through the contributions and dues of party members.

“It is hoped that, just as justice has been restored symbolically, justice will also be restored tangibly, by the return to CPP of all CPP properties nationwide, built with the hard earned dues of CPP members, and seized after the 1966 coup d’état 60 years ago,” the statement added.

According to the party, the restoration of these properties would enable it to rebuild and contribute meaningfully to national development.

“The kind gesture of renaming the Airport… will not be complete without the return of all CPP properties nationwide, in order for the Party to be back on its feet, to contribute its quota to the National Agenda,” it said.

The statement was signed by the CPP’s General Secretary, Comrade Kwame Nkrumah Botsio, and ended with the party’s slogan, “Forward Ever, Backward Never.”
