President John Dramani Mahama on Tuesday received the report of the Transition Committee on the proposed transfer of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) from the Ministry of Health to the University of Ghana, pledging swift action on its implementation.
The President assured the Transitional Management Committee—co-chaired by Professor Aaron Lawson, a former Provost of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Ghana—that the report would be immediately submitted to Cabinet for final input and approval.
He commended the committee for what he described as its diligence and commitment to the assignment.
He reiterated that the UGMC was established to serve as a world-class centre for research, training, and specialised medical care under the University of Ghana.
“University of Ghana Medical Centre is our highest quaternary medical facility in this country. Indeed, it is of world-class standard, and we want to see it maintain that standard both in terms of clinical care and in terms of logistics and equipment,” the president stated.
He stressed the need to chart a sustainable path that preserves the facility’s standards while strengthening its academic and clinical mandate.
“And so we want to find the best path by which we can maintain the hospital at the standard at which it is,” he added.
The Transitional Management Committee has recommended a 10-year transition framework to gradually wean the facility off government subventions, supported by performance-based leadership contracts to ensure efficiency, accountability, and long-term sustainability.
The proposed transfer is expected to align UGMC more closely with the University of Ghana’s teaching, research, and specialist training objectives while maintaining its status as a top-tier referral centre.
