The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) has assured more than 2,000 public sector workers whose salaries were temporarily suspended that their pay will be restored once they complete an employment verification process with the Ghana Audit Service.
The Department says the decision followed recommendations from the Auditor-General after a nationwide headcount exercise and was carried out in line with Public Financial Management (PFM) laws.
Speaking in an interview on Citi TV on Monday, February 2, 2026, Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Agyei explained that the initial report from the Auditor-General indicated that about 6,000 public officers had failed to participate in the headcount and were therefore not eligible for payment.
“The Auditor-General conducted a headcount exercise last year and, just last month, wrote to us indicating that about 6,000 officers had not participated in the exercise and therefore should not be paid.
“However, after our internal analysis, we realised that only about 2,000 officers were affected, as issues relating to the others had already been resolved,” he said.
Agyei said salary payments were subsequently suspended for the affected workers, while their institutions were informed to direct them to the Ghana Audit Service for verification.
“As a result, we suspended salary payments for those affected and have written to their respective institutions to inform the staff to avail themselves to the Ghana Audit Service for verification. Once the Auditor-General completes the process and formally notifies us, we will reactivate their payments.”
The CAGD emphasised that the exercise is aimed at protecting the integrity of the government payroll and ensuring accountability in the use of public funds.
The Department has assured that all verified workers will have their salaries reinstated promptly once the clearance process is completed.
