Flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong on Saturday cast his ballot in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) presidential primary at Assin Central, expressing confidence in a peaceful and credible process.
The former Assin Central Member of Parliament told journalists after voting that he did not expect a repeat of the challenges that characterised the party’s 2023 internal contest.
“I don’t think there’ll be a repetition of what happened in 2023. We hope it doesn’t happen. We’ve all done our job well to prevent rigging and everything, so I expect a fair contest,” he said.
Agyapong acknowledged that the campaign had at times been intense but said internal competition was normal in party politics.
“You should expect that sometimes it gets very tough… but that doesn’t mean you should go out of the party,” he said.
He assured supporters that the party would remain united after the vote, regardless of the outcome.
“We’re all going to come together as one party and work, so there shouldn’t be a problem at all. If I’m the winner, I will be able to bring the party together,” he added.
He also urged delegates who were yet to vote to turn out peacefully, noting a visible security presence at polling centres.
“I don’t expect any violence. If you look at the number of police here and everything — so far, so good,” he said.
Voting is ongoing across the country as thousands of delegates elect the party’s flagbearer ahead of the 2028 general elections.
