ECOWAS under pressure to deliver on roads to boost Africa trade

The President of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, Dr Omar Alieu Touray, has come under growing pressure to turn road projects into real trade gains for the region.

The call followed high-level talks with the African Union’s Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation, Lerato Mataboge, in Abuja, Nigeria, on Wednesday.

The meeting focused on accelerating infrastructure development as a key driver of intra-African trade. Dr Touray reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to the continental agenda, saying the partnership with the African Union is crucial for regional integration.

“We are pleased to be working under the leadership of the continental organisation,” he said.

But Mataboge made it clear that progress must now go beyond words. She praised ECOWAS’ work on road infrastructure but stressed the urgent need for tangible results that improve the movement of goods and people and boost livelihoods.

The engagement comes amid renewed pressure to operationalise the African Continental Free Trade Area, with poor infrastructure still slowing trade across the continent.

Analysts say the AU-ECOWAS talks signal a shift from policy alignment to delivery, as regional bodies face growing scrutiny over their ability to turn road networks into real economic lifelines.
