Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has called for unity, discipline and reconciliation within the New Patriotic Party (NPP) after being elected the party’s flagbearer, urging members to close ranks and work collectively toward victory in the 2028 general election.
Addressing delegates, party executives and supporters after securing the mandate, Bawumia described the contest as hard-fought but said the outcome belonged to the entire party.
“It is with a deep sense of pride and humility that I address you this evening following what has turned out to be a blistering battle for the flag bearership of the New Patriotic Party,” he said.
“To secure anything precious in this life, we must be prepared to fight the hard battles… And tonight, victory is for all of us.”
He thanked tens of thousands of delegates, the Electoral Commission, security agencies and the media for their roles in the process, saying their efforts had strengthened the party’s internal democracy.
Bawumia stressed that the party’s tradition of selecting leaders must be respected by both winners and losers.
“It matters not which side you supported. Winners and those who didn’t win at this particular time, we are in this together,” he said.
“As it is often said, after competition comes cooperation.”
He made what he described as a “passionate appeal” to members nursing grievances to set them aside in the party’s broader interest.
“We need every idea, every voice, and every piece of advice to help us preserve and project a proud tradition bequeathed to us by our forebears.”
The former Vice-President said unity would be critical to regaining power, citing what he called historical evidence that the party performs best when fully behind its candidate.
“The data shows that anytime the NPP is solidly behind the chosen flag bearer, the Ghanaian voter returns the favour by voting massively for our policies and programmes. We cannot therefore fail ourselves or Ghanaians.”
He pledged to embark on targeted engagements across the party, including outreach to elders and members who feel sidelined.
“Every voice matters. Every opinion is worth considering. And every suggestion is vital to building a formidable strategy.”
Bawumia also placed strong emphasis on internal discipline, warning that indiscipline could undermine the party’s electoral prospects.
“An army that lacks discipline will struggle to win its battles,” he said. “The NPP needs to step up discipline — discipline in our operations, discipline in our communications, and discipline in the conduct of our members.”
He urged supporters to celebrate his victory “in moderation” to avoid deepening tensions, adding: “As far as I am concerned, everybody has won.”
Turning to younger members, Bawumia said the future of the party rested on their energy and commitment.
“The outcome of this contest rightly belongs to you… The future of our party rests on your energy, dedication and desire to see a vibrant political vehicle,” he said, promising that the party would listen more closely to youth concerns.
He ended his address with a message of collective responsibility.
“We are in this together. We shall work together and we will win together.”
“The journey to victory in 2028 has just begun.”
