Former New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant Kennedy Agyapong has conceded defeat in the party’s presidential primary and called on his supporters to accept the results and unite behind winner Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.
Addressing party faithful shortly after the declaration of results, Agyapong said the decision of delegates must be respected and urged calm among his base.
“The delegates have spoken and I want to plead with my supporters that they should stay calm and respect the results and help all of us to work together to win the 2028 election,” he said.
Dr Bawumia was officially crowned the party’s flagbearer at the event attended by senior party executives, former presidents and national officers.
Agyapong stressed that defeat is part of democratic contests and should be accepted in good faith.
“In an election, you can win and you can lose. If you lose, you have to accept it in good faith,” he said.
He threw his weight behind the former Vice-President and encouraged party members to close ranks ahead of the next national polls.
“So let’s all of us throw our support to Mahamudu Bawumia, the flag bearer.”
The outspoken businessman and former Assin Central MP also underscored the need for mutual respect within the party, warning that unity cannot be forced without tolerance for differing views.
“MPP, we need unity in the party. But unity comes with respect. We have to respect each other’s views.”
His remarks form part of early reconciliation efforts within the NPP as the party seeks to quickly consolidate support following a competitive internal race and reposition itself for the 2028 general election.
Party leaders say healing internal divisions and presenting a united front will be crucial as the governing party prepares for what is expected to be a tightly contested national campaign.
