The Ashanti South Regional Police Command said it had intercepted 714 slabs of suspected cannabis and arrested a commercial driver during a routine check along the Bekwai–Aputuogya road.
The operation, carried out on 26 January, involved officers from the Bekwai District Command stopping a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus, registration AC 718-25.
A search of the vehicle uncovered nine nylon sacks containing the suspected narcotics.
The driver, Atampugri Akanyani, 50, was immediately detained and questioned. He reportedly told police that the consignment had been handed to him at the Kejetia Lorry Station in Kumasi and was to be delivered to an unidentified recipient in Obuasi for a fee of 600 Ghana cedis.
DCOP Joseph Hammond Nyaaba, Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, said the suspected drugs have been retained as evidence to support ongoing investigations, and the vehicle involved has been impounded.
Akanyani has been taken before a court to face legal proceedings.
“The Ashanti South Region remains a no-go area for criminal activities,” DCOP Nyaaba said, warning others involved in the transportation and distribution of narcotics.
The police command said it would continue to intensify snap checks and intelligence-led operations to ensure the safety and security of residents.
