A retired newscaster, Selma Ramatu Al-Hassan, has filed a defamation lawsuit against media personality Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, alongside Onua Television and its parent company Media General Ghana Ltd, demanding GHC10 million in damages.
Court documents seen by Asaase News show the suit was filed at the Accra High Court on 28 January, accusing the defendants of broadcasting false claims that Al-Hassan had a child out of wedlock with Ghana’s late former president, Jerry John Rawlings.
According to the statement of claim, the alleged remarks were made during a television programme aired on Onua TV on 28 November 2025, and later published on the station’s website and circulated widely on social media.
Al-Hassan says the broadcast attracted more than 54,000 views and triggered what she described as “disparaging and humiliating” comments portraying her as immoral and a home breaker.
She argues the claims are entirely false and malicious, adding that she has only one child from her late husband, businessman Alhaji Tijani Nagaya, who died in 2004.
The lawsuit names Captain Smart as first defendant, the Chief Executive Officer of Onua TV as second defendant, Onua Television as third defendant and Media General Ghana Ltd as fourth defendant.
The plaintiff is seeking a declaration that the broadcast was defamatory, a perpetual injunction to restrain further publication, public retractions and apologies across the same platforms, as well as punitive damages of GHC10 million and legal costs.
